Revision of UK battery regulation announced

7 June 2022

The UK Department of the Environment (Defra) is planning a revision of the UK Battery Regulations. A consultation will take place at the end of the year on the provisions for portable, industrial, and automotive batteries, as well as the implications of the new European Battery Regulation.

In the long term, kerbside collection is being considered as a measure to achieve collection targets for portable batteries. This would complement the likewise planned kerbside collection of small electrical equipment.

Different categories for industrial and automotive batteries are also being considered, along with concepts for individual and collective producer responsibility.

The EU Battery Regulation will have a bearing on the Northern Ireland Protocol. That is why the UK government is exploring what impact the new EU regulation will have and which requirements set by the EU that the UK could also adopt.
