WEEE Regulations extended to cover online marketplaces
As of 12 August 2025, the UK has significantly tightened its Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations, extending legal obligations to operators of online marketplaces.
The amendments aim to close a long-standing loophole that allowed non-UK suppliers to sell electrical products via digital platforms without contributing to collection and recycling costs.
Under the revised framework, online marketplaces are now defined as “producers” if they facilitate the sale of household electrical goods from overseas sellers to UK consumers.
These platforms must assume responsibility for financing the collection and treatment of this equipment, effectively ending more than a decade of “freeriding” by non-compliant foreign sellers.
The first registration deadline for affected platforms is 15 November 2025, with financial obligations commencing in January 2026.
The changes also introduce a new product category for vapes (Category 15), requiring producers to report and handle disposable e-cigarettes, pods and charging equipment separately due to their distinct treatment and recycling needs.
These reforms bring the UK more in line with efforts across Europe to close compliance gaps in extended producer responsibility, especially in the rapidly expanding online sector.
