New data requirement for packaging producers

For UK packaging producers, the introduction of Nation of Sale data collection and reporting represents a critical development in packaging EPR (pEPR) compliance.  

The legal requirement to track Nation of Sale data began on 1 January 2024, and mandatory reporting kicked in on 1 January 2026.

The first formal reports are due by 1 April 2027. 

The requirement is about tracking which UK nation (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales) packaging ultimately ends up in.

This granular data enables targeted waste management policies, smarter investment in recycling infrastructure and nation-specific recycling targets.

Who needs to report?  

The obligation to collect and report Nation of Sale data applies to any business that handles packaging and meets the thresholds for pEPR, including sellers, distributors, online marketplaces and importers.

The data must be accurate, fully auditable and supported by robust methodology.
