Single-use plastic regulations now in 49 jurisdictions

8 April 2025

With growing global momentum to curb plastic pollution, Latin America is emerging as a key region for single-use plastic (SUP) regulations. Following developments worldwide, governments across the region are implementing bans, restrictions and recycled content mandates, creating a complex landscape of legislative regulations.

Landbell Group’s Knowledge Database (KDB) now tracks SUP laws in 49 jurisdictions – across plastic bags, beverage containers, cups and recycled content obligations – providing businesses with up-to-date insights for their compliance and sustainability strategies.

Currently, plastic bag bans lead the way with nine countries having national-level bans or restrictions on plastic bags, including Uruguay and Costa Rica, both of which require businesses to charge for plastic bags at the point of sale.

Further countries, including Belize and Ecuador, have imposed partial restrictions through emerging policies.

So, what’s next for Latin America?

More SUP-related and recycled content laws are expected, following the EU and Canada’s lead, together with greater efforts for stricter unified rules.

The KDB provides real-time updates on SUP bans, EPR and recycled content laws, as well as state-by-state breakdowns for Argentina and Brazil. It helps businesses operating in Latin America to stay ahead of rapidly evolving SUP regulations.
